It was a Thursday, I had a voicemail message asking me How can someone learn to meditate? Soon me a young lady were discussing how she could she begin meditating regularly. She had heard that meditating is like riding a bike, once you’ve learned how to meditate then it’s a process you’ll have access to for the entirety of your life.
But where can you learn to meditate?
There are hundreds of meditation tutorials on the internet, in fact I do have meditations available here. So they are often a good place to start.
Meditation is practiced in countless ways too. Because of this- in the beginning of your meditation journey, It’s possible to feel confused at first about what to do and how to complete a session of meditation.
The type of meditation can be important, however with meditation oftentimes its the form i.e posture, breathing, alignment, focus, that’s even more taken into account for a successful meditation.
To actually learn meditation be ready to relax, open up, let go and breathe. Keep it simple. Choose a meditation that resonates with you. So long as the meditations you choose are not complicated with lots of jargon, or even too many steps.
You should be good by keeping things with meditation simple. Otherwise you may never get around to actually meditating. And that’s not the goal right? Of course its not.
If the goal is to just get into meditation…To sit down to do meditation- Let’s get started right. Its proper to use the wisdom of a meditation guide, as you get yourself started.
There are several ways to use a guide to easily begin your practice. You can use a book, an instructor, online videos, blogs, magazines. Many of these options can help to learn how to get comfortable with doing meditation to take the mystery out of it. Many of these resources can be good at highlighting the steps to easy successful meditation.
This is what you want perhaps…just to get some regular meditation. I feel you. The benefits are amazing.
You will find the many guides out there do take the time out to explain any terms they are using so that beginners can understand them. A guide or a good meditation and a meditation teacher can really demystify the process of meditation.
As a kundalini yoga meditation teacher myself I would suggest that When you are starting out, it’s important to choose a meditation method that’s easy for you to pick up.
I’d personally suggest a breathing meditation, a walking meditation or, if you prefer, a “high tech” guided meditation (like the ones I create) where all you need to do is sit down and play a track.
There are pluses and minuses to each of these methods, but as a general rule they are all easy enough to pick up.
Once you’ve decided on a meditation method, practice using it for a week or so to see whether or not you really get on with it. If you do, keep going with it. If you don’t, do another week just to see how the meditation method works for you.
Then after about two weeks of practice, if that doesn’t work as you would prefer then try another method instead. As with everything else in life, not everyone gets on with everything. There’s no embarrassment if you find you don’t like a particular meditation method.
A week or two’s trial is a good length of time. Anything less and it’s unlikely you’ve given the method a fair trial. After all, it probably took you more than one lesson to drive a car, or to learn a musical instrument, how to walk etc.

Once you choose to meditate, its nice to do your best to meditate at the same time each day. This helps the body get into practice to relax.
Since its been said that we’re creatures of habit and this includes meditation-this is ultra helpful. Especially when you are learning something new, set aside a specific time of the day when you are most likely to be able to carry out your meditation practice. Your entire being will thank you!
